  Non Destructive Testing Services

A&D Lifting has recently introduced Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of wire ropes.

Our state-of-the-art Magnograph II USB Wire Rope Tester is a computerised electromagnetic instrument which uses specially designed sensor heads to take an accurate digital trace of a working rope.

The NDT head is fitted to the rope in a fixed position as near to the end as possible. The rope then runs through the sensor head collecting the test data. The trace is recorded on a notebook computer and can be played back after the test in order to discuss the rope condition with the customer.

The following traces are recorded:

  1. Local Faults (LF), which could be broken wires, damage, crushing or splices; and
  2. Loss of Metallic Area (LMA) which measures the rope cross section and any effect of wear.

Wire ropes of any construction can be tested, in sizes ranging from 12 to 64mm, at speeds from creep speed to a safe limit (three metres/second).

Any areas of damage can then be accurately located to allow further visual inspection by our competent operators.

A full report including analysis is provided in accordance with Australian Standards requirements (AS/NZS 4812;2003). Decisions regarding the ropes continued use or discard is discussed with the customer.

We also are able to carry out destruct tests on a sample of the rope if available.

We welcome any enquiries and will happily provide a quotation and advise on the suitability of NDT in your operation.
